Literature serves as a vital pedagogical tool, not only for linguistic development but also for fostering ecological awareness. This research explores the discourse of environmental ethics in Frank Herbert’s novel, The Green Brain. The study aims to (1) describe the nuances of the narrative through story grammar, psycholinguistic, and intertextual analyses, and (2) investigate the management of nature through the lens of environmental ethics.
Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Mandler and Johnson (1977), James Paul Gee (2014), and Julia Kristeva (1969), this qualitative study applies suprasegmental and intertextual techniques to uncover story grammar and ideological tensions within the text. Furthermore, the novel is analyzed using Barrow’s (2006) concepts of anthropocentric, ecocentric, and biocentric ethics, alongside Carley and Christie’s (1992) technocratic environmental ethics.
The findings reveal that The Green Brain represents a complex interplay of environmental ethics. The analysis identifies four distinct approaches: (1) Anthropocentrism, manifested through humans' dominant and exploitative attitude toward nature; (2) Ecocentrism, shown through the awareness of the intrinsic interconnectedness of ecosystems; (3) Technocratic Ethics, reflecting the belief in technological solutions for ecological crises; and (4) Biocentrism, emphasizing biodiversity and the inherent right to life for all organisms. Through linguistic structure, narrative rhythm, and intertextuality, the novel critically rejects environmental exploitation and advocates for an ecological narrative rooted in balance and moral responsibility. This research suggests that Herbert’s work remains highly relevant for developing students' critical thinking regarding contemporary environmental challenges.
