Abstract

Ilfiah. 2025. Enhancing Speaking Skills Through Duolingo: An Exploration of User Experiences. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Duolingo, Speaking Skills, User Experience, Gamification, Voice Recognition.

The integration of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) has revolutionized how students engage with English outside the traditional classroom. This research explores the experiences of students at SMAN 1 Suboh in utilizing the Duolingo application to enhance their English speaking skills. The study investigates students' motivations, challenges, and perceived benefits, with a specific focus on Duolingo’s voice recognition technology, gamification elements, and overall usability. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews and observations to capture a comprehensive view of the user experience.

The findings reveal that Duolingo significantly aids in improving pronunciation and boosting students' confidence through its repetitive and low-stakes practice environment. The gamification features were noted for increasing learner engagement and consistency. However, the study identifies several limitations: the application lacks depth in providing authentic, spontaneous conversational practice, and students occasionally encountered technical inaccuracies in the automated speech recognition (ASR) system.

Students expressed a preference for more interactive features, such as simulated conversations with native speakers or AI-driven dialogue, to further bridge the gap between drill exercises and real-world communication. The research concludes that while Duolingo is a powerful tool for foundational speaking practice, its effectiveness is maximized when integrated with other communicative language learning methods. These insights provide valuable feedback for educators in implementing MALL tools and for developers in enhancing pedagogical features for English language learners.
