Abstract

Hamidah, Kuni Zakiyatul. 2025. Investigating Non-English Major Teachers' Experiences in Teaching English. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Non-English Major Teacher, Teaching Challenges, Adaptive Strategies, Pesantren Context.

As a compulsory subject in Indonesian junior high schools, English instruction often faces a shortage of qualified language educators, particularly within Islamic boarding schools (pesantren). This situation necessitates the recruitment of non-English major teachers to lead the classroom, creating unique pedagogical dynamics. This study aims to investigate the lived experiences of a non-English major teacher in teaching English at MTs Nurul Jadid, focusing on the professional challenges encountered and the adaptive strategies employed to facilitate student learning.

Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach with a phenomenological design, data were gathered through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations. The research focuses on capturing the essence of the teacher's professional journey in navigating a subject outside their primary expertise.

The findings reveal that the primary challenges extend beyond linguistic mastery to include systemic issues, such as student fatigue resulting from rigorous pesantren schedules and low learner motivation. Despite the lack of formal English education training, the teacher successfully mitigates these obstacles through adaptive classroom management, contextualized instruction, and continuous independent professional development. The study concludes that commitment, professional awareness, and contextual adaptability allow non-English major teachers to provide effective instruction. These results emphasize the need for targeted pedagogical support for out-of-field teachers to ensure the quality of English education in specialized environments.
