Abstract

Putra, Muhammad Andika. 2025. The Discourse of Civil Resistance in Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Dr. Tirmidi, M.Pd.

Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Edward Abbey, Civil Resistance, Ecocriticism.

Literature often serves as a medium for social critique, reflecting tensions between industrial development and ecological preservation. This research investigates the discourse of civil resistance in Edward Abbey’s novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang. The study aims to identify the central themes and analyze the discursive construction of resistance against infrastructure development, driven by environmental degradation and political oppression.

Using a qualitative discourse analysis approach, this study integrates Julia Kristeva’s (1969) theories of suprasegmental and intertextuality. The suprasegmental elements are examined through Jan Renkema’s (2004) psycholinguistic approach to explore the narrative structure and its cognitive impact. Meanwhile, the intertextual dimensions are analyzed through James Paul Gee’s (2014) framework to reveal how civil resistance is discursively constructed within the broader social and political context.

The findings show that Abbey’s narrative functions as a radical critique of large-scale construction projects. The central theme identified is civil resistance manifested through acts of "ecotage" or sabotage as a form of protest. This resistance is discursively constructed through several factors: the exploitation of natural resources, political repression, and the moral dilemmas faced by individuals who oppose state-sponsored development. Through linguistic structure and intertextual references, the novel constructs a discourse that challenges anthropocentric industrialism. This research suggests that educators utilize such literary works to foster critical thinking and ecological awareness among students. Future research is encouraged to explore similar discourses of activism across different literary genres.
