Family and marriage are dynamic social constructs that evolve alongside cultural and economic shifts. This study investigates the discourse of family and marriage within Barbara Kingsolver’s Homeland and Other Stories, a collection renowned for its nuanced portrayal of contemporary social life. Utilizing a qualitative approach and discourse analysis, the study examines five selected stories: “Homeland,” “Blueprint,” “Covered Bridges,” “Quality Time,” and “Stone Dreams.” The objective is to analyze how Kingsolver constructs various family structures and marital dynamics in response to modern social pressures.

The analysis reveals a diverse array of family types, including extended, cohabiting, single-parent, childfree, and dysfunctional families. Kingsolver’s narratives highlight the complexity and evolving nature of these relationships, emphasizing themes of identity, belonging, and social adaptation. The discourse analysis further demonstrates that the characters’ familial constructions are deeply influenced by personal values, cultural heritage, and socioeconomic challenges, reflecting a tension between traditional expectations and modern realities.

The study concludes that Kingsolver’s work serves as a critical reflection of changing social values, encouraging readers to reconsider traditional definitions of kinship and domesticity. It is suggested that future research explore Kingsolver’s fiction through historical or broader sociological frameworks. Additionally, the study recommends the use of these stories in educational settings to foster critical thinking and intercultural understanding, particularly regarding the diversity of human relationships in English language learning contexts.
