Abstract

Surur, Nikmahus. 2024. Student’s interest in speaking English on direct practice with native speakers. Undergraduate Program Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Bradiansyah Tri Suryanto, S.S., M.pd.

Keywords: Direct practice, Native speakers, English.

This study aimed to investigate the Student’s interest in speaking English on direct practice with native speakers. with a focus on mastery of student’s interest in speaking English and what factors influence student interest in direct practice with native speakers. Using a qualitative approach, data was collected from focus group discussions involving 40 students. The results of the study indicate that direct practice with native speakers significantly increased students' interest in speaking English, as reflected in increased self-confidence, motivation, and communication effectiveness. Students reported that the experience of speaking with native speakers made them more engaged and motivated to learn, as well as helping them understand vocabulary and language nuances in real-life contexts. Additionally, support from teachers and peers also plays a crucial role in creating a positive learning environment. This study reinforces existing literature on the benefits of direct practice with native speakers and provides new insights into the factors influencing students' motivation in English language learning. Despite limitations in the subjective nature of the data, these findings suggest that direct practice with native speakers can be an effective method for enhancing students' interest and speaking ability in English. Therefore, it is recommended that educational institutions integrate more interactive sessions into the English curriculum and adopt diverse teaching methods to enhance student engagement. Further research is needed to explore other factors that may influence students' interest in learning English.
