Abstract

Hamidah, Nurul. 2025. Visual Media as a Medium in Teaching English: A Descriptive Study. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.

Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Visual Media, Learning Strategy, EFL Students.

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental prerequisite for acquiring the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. However, limited vocabulary remains a significant barrier for many EFL learners. This study investigates the utilization of visual media as an instructional tool to enhance vocabulary mastery at MTs Terpadu Nurul Anwar. By implementing pictures, videos, posters, and digital tools, the research explores how these media help students better conceptualize, memorize, and utilize new English vocabulary.

Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, this research focuses on three students from different grade levels who demonstrated notable vocabulary improvement through visual media integration. Data were collected via in-depth interviews, direct classroom observations, and documentation analysis.

The findings indicate that visual media facilitate vocabulary acquisition by providing concrete visual references, which bridge the gap between abstract words and their meanings.
