Abstract
Kholishoh, Nur Diana. 2025. The Discourse of Human-Insect Coexistence in Frank Herbert’s The Green Brain. Undergraduate program at Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (1) Dr. Tirmidi, M.Pd.
Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Human-Insect Coexistence, The Green Brain
This study aims to explore human-insect coexistence through the lens of Frank Herbert's The Green Brain, focusing on how the novel constructs ecological discourse to challenge human-nature relationships. Using a qualitative research design, the study employs discourse analysis combined with psycholinguistic and intertextual approaches to analyze narrative structures, character development, and linguistic features within the text. The research instrument uses library research, and the data collection involved a close reading of the novel, extracting relevant passages that reflect themes of coexistence and ecological awareness. The analysis highlights how Herbert uses language to create non-human subjectivities and counter-discourses that question human dominance over insects and nature. The findings reveal that The Green Brain foregrounds environmental themes by illustrating humans’ neglect of other species, rooted in a lack of understanding of their ecological benefits. The discourse analysis reveals that the novel promotes a vision of coexistence, encouraging readers to reevaluate anthropocentric attitudes. The discussion emphasizes the novel’s role in fostering ecological consciousness and moral reflection through literary means. The conclusion suggests that integrating such ecological narratives in education can enhance students’ awareness of biodiversity and ethical responsibility. Future research is recommended to explore pedagogical strategies for using Herbert’s work to develop moral values and ecological literacy within sociological or historical contexts. This study contributes to the discourse on human-insect coexistence by demonstrating how literature such as The Green Brain, can influence environmental thought through narrative and language.
