Abstract
Pratiwi, Rumiati. 2025. Gamification and Motivation: Modern Challenges for Junior High School Teachers in Teaching English Speaking Skills. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: Gamification, Teachers' Challenges, Speaking Skills, Student Motivation.
In the digital era, traditional teaching methods often struggle to maintain student engagement, particularly in developing oral communication skills. This study examines the contemporary challenges faced by junior high school teachers in teaching English speaking skills through the implementation of gamification as a motivational catalyst. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, the research focuses on teachers’ lived experiences within their specific instructional contexts. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and supporting documentation, followed by thematic analysis to identify prevailing obstacles and adaptive strategies.
The findings reveal that teachers encounter significant structural and pedagogical challenges, including a lack of adequate technological resources, substantial constraints in preparation time, and difficulties in maintaining sustained student motivation. Furthermore, teachers face the complexity of aligning gamified elements—such as points, leaderboards, and badges—with the diverse proficiency levels and learning styles of students.
The study highlights that while gamification offers immense potential to reduce speaking anxiety, its success depends heavily on the teacher's ability to balance playfulness with academic rigor. The research concludes by emphasizing the urgent need for professional development and institutional support to empower teachers in optimizing gamified language learning. These insights contribute to the broader discourse on integrating educational technology to foster more interactive and communicative English language classrooms at the junior high school level.
