Abstract

Syarifah, Saniyatus. 2025. The Discourse Analysis of Unsustainable Development on Dams in Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Dr. Tirmidi, M.Pd.

Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Unsustainable Development, The Monkey Wrench Gang, Ecoliterature.

Literature serves as a critical tool for examining the complex relationship between industrial progress and ecological integrity. This study aims to analyze the central themes and the discursive representation of dams in Edward Abbey’s The Monkey Wrench Gang within Julia Kristeva’s discourse analysis framework. Utilizing a qualitative literary analysis design, the research employs a close reading methodology to explore the narrative as its primary data source.

The research instruments integrate Mandler and Johnson’s (1977) story grammar for suprasegmental thematic identification, alongside James Paul Gee’s (2014) intertextual analysis. These are further synthesized with McCully’s (1996) ecological framework to evaluate the perceptions of dam construction. Data collection involves a systematic textual analysis of narrative elements, character trajectories, and environmental discourse.

The findings reveal that radical environmental resistance against unsustainable development constitutes the core value of the text. This is demonstrated through the transformation of four activists from peaceful advocacy to systematic sabotage in response to institutional indifference toward ecological concerns. The analysis portrays dams as inherently unsustainable structures, highlighting their role in ecological disruption and negative social impacts.

This ecoliterature analysis contributes to the development of literature-based language teaching methodologies that integrate ecological awareness into English education. The study concludes that Edward Abbey’s work provides a significant platform for fostering environmental consciousness. Further research is recommended to explore similar ecological literary works to strengthen the ecoliterature corpus and develop curriculum models for sustainable education practices.
