Abstract

Sulala, Warda. 2025. Teachers’ Experiences in Teaching Reading Comprehension by Using Word Wall at Secondary School. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Teachers’ Experience, Word Wall, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary Mastery, Narrative Inquiry.

Reading comprehension in a second language is deeply intertwined with lexical competence. Many students struggle to decode English texts primarily due to limited vocabulary mastery. This study explores the experiences of an English teacher in utilizing "Word Wall" media—a visual learning tool designed to facilitate vocabulary recognition and retention—within the context of reading instruction at the secondary school level.

Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach with a narrative inquiry method, this research delves into the lived experiences of a teacher at a secondary school in East Java. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The analysis follows a narrative descriptive technique, focusing on the participant’s personal, professional, and reflective journey in implementing the media.

The findings reveal that the Word Wall serves as a significant visual anchor that enhances students’ vocabulary acquisition and reading motivation. The teacher integrated the Word Wall into three distinct instructional stages: pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading. Despite its benefits, the teacher encountered logistical challenges, such as limited classroom space and the time-intensive nature of updating vocabulary. These obstacles were mitigated through creative adaptations, including rotating vocabulary sets and fostering student agency by involving them in the maintenance of the wall. The study concludes that visual media like Word Wall, supported by reflective teaching practices, can significantly improve student engagement and autonomy in mastering reading comprehension.
