Abstract

Bariroh, Wasilatul. 2025. Students’ Perception of Speaking Regulation in an Islamic Boarding School. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Islamic Boarding School, Student Perception, Speaking Regulation, Phenomenological Study.

Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) are unique educational institutions that integrate religious, academic, and social education. In recent years, many pesantrens have implemented strict speaking regulations—often referred to as language zones—to enhance students' linguistic proficiency through daily immersion. This study aims to explore students' perceptions of these speaking regulations at Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School, specifically focusing on (1) the nature of their perceptions and (2) the factors that influence the formation of those perceptions.

This research employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to capture the lived experiences of 13 students from four different language institutions within the language zone. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the thematic analysis framework by Braun & Clarke.

The findings indicate that students' perceptions of speaking regulation evolve through a psychological trajectory consisting of acceptance, understanding, and evaluation. Initial doubts or resistance gradually shifted into positive perceptions as students engaged consistently with the regulation in their daily environment. Furthermore, the study identifies several influencing factors, including personal motivation, previous linguistic experiences, the structural design of the regulation itself, and the presence of supportive elements within their social and learning environments. The study concludes that while speaking regulations can be perceived as challenging, they are ultimately viewed as essential catalysts for language development when supported by a conducive communal atmosphere.
