Abstract
Jannah, Siti Kholilatul (2022). Analyzing Students’ Perception of Speaking Problems at Tenth Class Language Acceleration (LA) of Nurul Jadid Senior High School. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I): Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd. Advisor (II): M. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.
Keywords: Students’ Perception, Speaking Problems.
This research investigates students’ perceptions regarding speaking difficulties encountered by the tenth-grade Language Acceleration (LA) students at Nurul Jadid Senior High School. Despite residing in a dedicated language dormitory, many students struggle to speak English proficiently. These difficulties stem from various factors, including improper pronunciation, grammatical inaccuracies, diverse educational backgrounds, lack of consistent practice, and limited memory retention when beginning to use English due to time constraints in their daily speaking habits.
The primary objective of this study was to explore and describe students' opinions regarding these speaking challenges. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the researcher collected data through observations and semi-structured interviews. The informants consisted of all 22 students in the tenth-grade Language Acceleration class. Data analysis was conducted through data collection, reduction, and drawing conclusions.
The findings indicate that students' perceptions of speaking problems center on several key issues: the dual focus on both Mandarin and English, limited time dedicated specifically to English, disparities in prior English learning experiences, and difficulties in mastering native-like pronunciation and grammar while being hindered by mother tongue interference. Furthermore, the analysis revealed specific negative perceptions of speaking problems consisting of four major inhibitors: high use of the mother tongue, psychological inhibition, having "nothing to say," and low or uneven participation among peers. These results are expected to serve as a reference for students and educators to overcome speaking obstacles within the Language Acceleration program.
