Abstract
Wulandari, Suci (2022). Analysis of Students’ Anxiety in Speaking English Performance. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I): Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd. Advisor (II): Abdullah Al Anis, M.Pd.
Keywords: Anxiety, Speaking English, Junior High School.
This research analyzed the factors contributing to students' anxiety in English speaking performance at MTs Nurul Jadid. The objectives were to explore the various factors of speaking anxiety and to identify the most dominant factor among them. The study employed a descriptive quantitative research design, utilizing a questionnaire as the primary instrument for data collection.
The research sample consisted of 25 students from class VIII Agama 3 at MTs Nurul Jadid, selected through a purposive sampling technique. The findings revealed six distinct factors that contribute to students' anxiety in speaking English: over self-prediction toward fear, irrational faith, oversensitivity toward threat, the sensitivity of anxiety, wrong attribution of body signals, and low self-efficacy.
The results of the data analysis indicated that "oversensitivity toward threat" was the most dominant factor influencing students' speaking anxiety. These findings suggest that students' perceived fear of negative evaluation or potential failure in a social performance context is the primary barrier to their speaking fluency.
