Abstract

Banun, Baihaqi Sri (2023). Implementing Jigsaw Method to Improve Students’ Reading Skill. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I): Abdullah Al Anis, M.Pd. Advisor (II): Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Reading Skill, Jigsaw Method, Classroom Action Research.

In the context of English as a foreign language in Indonesia, reading is a crucial skill for accessing a vast array of international literature and information. However, students often face difficulties in mastering this skill. This research aims to improve students' reading skills through the implementation of the Jigsaw method, a cooperative learning technique where students work in small groups of five to six members to master specific segments of a text and share them with their peers.

This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) methodology, designed to address classroom problems and improve learning outcomes through direct intervention. Data were gathered through both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Qualitative data were collected through observations to monitor changes in students' attitudes and behavior, while quantitative data were obtained through pre-tests and post-tests to measure reading improvement.

The findings indicate that the Jigsaw method significantly enhanced students' motivation and classroom interaction. While some challenges were initially noted in generating ideas for narrative texts, the overall process fostered a more dynamic learning environment. Most students showed high interest in the discussion activities, as the method effectively involved them in the learning process. The result suggests that the Jigsaw method is an effective pedagogical tool for improving reading engagement and comprehension in an EFL classroom.
