Abstract
Mashunah, Hilyah. 2023. The Effectiveness of English Songs in Increasing Listening Skills at MA Nurul Jadid. Thesis. English Education Program, Faculty of Social and Humanities, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Abdullah Al-Anis, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.
Keywords: Listening Skills, English Songs, Quantitative Research.
This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of English songs in improving the listening skills of students at MA Nurul Jadid. This study employed a quantitative approach with a single-group research design. The population consisted of 62 students from the tenth-grade language classes (X Language) at MA Nurul Jadid, Paiton, Probolinggo. A sample of 22 students from class X Language 2 was selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through observation, tests, and questionnaires. The tests were used to measure students' listening proficiency, while the questionnaires gathered data on their engagement with English songs. The data were processed using SPSS, and a Pearson correlation test was conducted to test the research hypothesis.
The results demonstrate that the use of English songs has a significant positive effect on increasing listening skills. The correlation coefficient between the variables was found to be $r = 0.845$, indicating a very strong relationship. Consequently, the alternative hypothesis ($H_a$) is accepted, and the null hypothesis ($H_0$) is rejected. These findings are consistent with previous research suggesting that songs as learning tools can significantly enhance listening abilities. English songs motivate students to explore the meanings of lyrics, thereby improving their overall comprehension. In conclusion, English songs are an effective medium for increasing the listening skills of students at MA Nurul Jadid. This method is recommended as a valuable alternative for English teachers. Future studies are encouraged to investigate the long-term effects of this method across different levels of language proficiency.
