Abstract

Syafiyah, Hilyatus. 2023. English Teachers’ Strategies in Teaching Speaking Skills at MTs Nurul Jadid. Thesis. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li., Advisor (II) Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: English Teacher’s Strategies, Speaking Skills, Qualitative Research.

In learning to speak English, students often encounter challenges such as limited vocabulary, inaccurate pronunciation, and a lack of confidence. These issues are influenced by several factors, one of the most significant being the teacher's instructional strategies. Effective strategies are crucial in facilitating students' speaking mastery. Consequently, this research analyzes the strategies employed by English teachers in teaching speaking at MTs Nurul Jadid. The objectives of this study are: (1) to identify the specific strategies used by English teachers, and (2) to describe the implementation of these strategies in teaching speaking to students at MTs Nurul Jadid.

This study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects were English teachers specializing in the ninth grade at MTs Nurul Jadid. Data were collected through questionnaires and supplemented by interviews. To ensure data trustworthiness, the researcher utilized methodological triangulation.

The results of this study indicate that English teachers implement a comprehensive series of plans, methods, and approaches designed to achieve specific educational objectives. These include identifying expected behavioral and personality changes in students, selecting appropriate learning systems, and determining specific procedures and techniques for instruction. Furthermore, the teachers establish clear norms and minimum standards of success as criteria for evaluating student achievement in speaking skills.
