ABSTRACT
Reading is a fundamental skill that is closely related to other language proficiencies such as speaking, listening, and writing. This study aims to investigate students' difficulties in reading comprehension and to identify the factors causing these issues among the tenth-grade students of MA Raudlatul Ulum Situbondo during the 2022/2023 academic year. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method to achieve two primary objectives: first, to determine the specific difficulties faced by students when comprehending English narrative texts, and second, to identify the underlying factors contributing to these challenges. Data were collected through interviews and reading tests, which were then analyzed using the data analysis technique proposed by Miles and Huberman.
The findings of the research reveal several critical factors that hinder students' ability to comprehend narrative texts. The researcher identified three primary factors as the root causes of reading comprehension issues: students' lack of background knowledge, the instructional techniques employed by the teacher, and the learners' environment. These elements collectively impact the students' proficiency, suggesting that a more supportive environment and diverse teaching strategies are necessary to improve reading outcomes. This study provides a foundational understanding for educators to address specific linguistic and environmental barriers in the classroom.
