Abstract
Nisa, Khoirin. 2023. The Effectiveness of Total Physical Response (TPR) Method in Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension at MTs Lubbul Labib. Thesis. English Education Program, Faculty of Social and Humanities, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) M. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li., Advisor (II) Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.
Keywords: Total Physical Response (TPR), Reading Comprehension.
Reading comprehension is the essential ability to understand written text by identifying the meaning of words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs. Based on a preliminary study at MTs Lubbul Labib, it was found that students’ comprehension levels remained low, necessitating an effective instructional intervention. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in improving reading comprehension, as suggested by previous research regarding its impact on student engagement. This research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design, utilizing pre-test and post-test scores from 27 eighth-grade students. The data were collected through reading tests and analyzed using a T-test to determine the students' progress. The results demonstrate that the TPR method successfully motivated students and created a more enjoyable learning environment. This effectiveness is evidenced by the students' mean score, which increased significantly from 41.11 in the pre-test to 81.03 in the post-test. Furthermore, the statistical analysis showed that the T-test value was greater than the T-table value (13.261 > 1.703), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis ($H_0$) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis ($H_1$). In conclusion, the Total Physical Response method is an effective strategy for enhancing the reading comprehension of students at MTs Lubbul Labib.
