Abstract

Rizal, M. Abu Z. 2023. Teachers’ Strategies in Understanding Students’ Characteristics in Learning English: A Case Study at Language Intensive Programs (LIPS) of SMP Nurul Jadid. Keywords: Teachers' Strategies, Students’ Characteristics, Learning English.

This research explores the strategies employed by teachers to understand students' characteristics in learning English at the Language Intensive Programs (LIPS) of SMP Nurul Jadid, as well as identifying the specific characteristics presented by these students. Using a qualitative case study design adapted from John W. Creswell, the study was conducted in three stages: the pre-field stage, the fieldwork stage, and the data analysis stage. The participants included two teachers and six students, with data collection conducted through interviews, observations, and document reviews. Data validity was ensured through triangulation, while the analysis followed the Huberman and Saldaña model, involving data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The findings reveal that LIPS teachers identify students' learning characteristics through two primary methods: (1) analyzing the students' development during their stay and study in the intensive program, and (2) observing students' actions and behaviors during teaching and learning activities. The results indicate that despite being in a specialized program, students possess diverse characteristics that significantly influence their English learning process. Consequently, it is expected that educators provide appropriate teaching methods tailored to the specific tendencies and characteristics of their students.
