Abstract

Khalishah, Nor. 2023. A Narrative Inquiry into EFL Students’ Obstacles in Speaking English at Nurul Jadid University. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Syaiful Islam, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Mochlis Eko Wijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Speaking, EFL Students, Narrative Inquiry.

In recent decades, personal experience has emerged as a significant object of research. This study utilizes a narrative inquiry approach to explore the lived experiences of three EFL students at Nurul Jadid University, specifically focusing on the factors causing speaking difficulties and the strategies used to overcome them. Narrative research was selected as the research design to deeply explore individual life experiences and provide a comprehensive understanding of the students' challenges. The analysis reveals that all three students encountered significant obstacles in speaking, including inhibition, a lack of topical knowledge, low participation, and the interference of their mother tongue. To address these challenges, the students employed several practical strategies, such as outlining main ideas before speaking, practicing pronunciation and intonation, and habitually engaging in English conversations with peers. These findings highlight the importance of understanding student narratives to foster better speaking proficiency in an EFL context.
