Abstract

Aisa, Siti. 2023. An Analysis of Students’ Difficulties in Reading Comprehension at the Seventh Grade of MTs Miftahul Ulum. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd., (II) Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Students’ Difficulties, Reading Comprehension.

The objective of this study was to identify the difficulties encountered by seventh-grade students at MTs Miftahul Ulum in reading comprehension. This study employed a qualitative research design, focusing on a subject group of fourteen students. Data were collected through interviews and observations, followed by a rigorous process of data analysis and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that students possess varying levels of proficiency in English, with the majority facing significant challenges in deciphering the meaning of the words they read. The primary source of these struggles is limited vocabulary knowledge, which directly impacts their ability to comprehend written texts. Consequently, students frequently experience confusion and boredom during reading activities. Furthermore, their difficulties are compounded by a lack of familiarity with effective reading comprehension techniques. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers implement more appropriate and engaging teaching methods to help students overcome these barriers and improve their overall reading proficiency.
