Abstract

Nadia Khoir, Farrah Maulida. 2024. Students’ Attitude Toward English Learning in Mixed and Single-Gender Classroom. Undergraduate Program Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Dr. Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li, Dr. Syaiful Islam M.Pd.

Keywords: student attitude, mixed and single gender classroom, English learning

This study describes students' attitudes toward English learning in mixed and single-gender classrooms. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The participants were students of Nurul Jadid University's study program in English Education. The instruments used were observation and in-depth interviews to collect data. Data analysis techniques are carried out by the theory of G. Glaser and Anselm L. Strauss, known as Grounded Theory, through Data Reduction, Data Presentation, and Drawing Conclusions. The findings showed a significant difference in attitude between students in single-gender and mixed-gender setting classes. The results of interviews with students showed that they experienced difficulties and felt troubled while in a mixed-gender setting class and could enjoy studying the lessons calmly in a single-gender class. Learning a foreign language such as English requires effort because it involves a complex process that includes understanding grammar, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Additionally, students must adapt to ways of thinking and communicating differently from their native language, which requires regular practice and consistency. Classes with single or mixed-gender arrangements, each have advantages and disadvantages that can affect factors such as physical comfort, a conducive work atmosphere, and social support. These factors play an important role in determining optimal learning outcomes, which in turn shapes student attitudes.
