Abstract
Wijaya, Mohammad Ridwan Adi. 2024. Discourse Analysis of Feudal Nobility in HAMKA’S Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Dr. Tirmidi, M.Pd.
Keywords: Literature, Discourse Analysis, Novel, Feudal Nobility.
Literature, particularly the novel, serves as a significant medium that captures the interest of both students and educators as literary enthusiasts. To deeply understand and critically evaluate the essential content of a novel, the competence to conduct discourse analysis is fundamentally required. This research aims to describe and analyze the narrative structure and the significance of feudal aristocracy within the society depicted in HAMKA’s classic novel, Di Bawah Lindungan Ka’bah. To achieve these objectives, the researcher employs the Psycholinguistic Approach developed by John Mandler and Nancy Johnson, utilizing story grammar diagrams to discern the plot structure.
The research findings indicate that through its plot, the main character, Hamid, is portrayed as an impoverished child with a strong desire for higher education. His life changes upon meeting Haji Jafar, a benevolent wealthy man who sponsors his education alongside his own daughter, Zainab. However, the narrative reaches a conflict when Hamid falls in love with Zainab, a romance that remains unfulfilled due to the rigid social class differences between them. Furthermore, the discursive analysis identifies the socio-cultural factors that sustain the importance of feudal nobility within that society, where lineage and social status dictate personal relationships and life opportunities. This study highlights how HAMKA uses the narrative to critique the restrictive nature of feudalism in early 20th-century Indonesian society.
