Abstract

Murtasiyah. 2024. Discourse Analysis on Trust and Betrayal in Ratih Kumala’s Novel "Gadis Kretek". Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Dr. Tirmidi, M.Pd.

Keywords: Discourse Analysis, Literature, Novel, Trust, Betrayal.

Literature, particularly the novel, plays a prominent role in engaging students and educators as connoisseurs of literary works. However, to deeply understand and critically evaluate the essential content of a novel, the competence to conduct discourse analysis is significantly required. This study aims to describe and analyze the narrative structure and the intertextual elements within Ratih Kumala’s novel, Gadis Kretek. To achieve these objectives, the researcher employs the Psycholinguistic Approach developed by John Mandler and Nancy Johnson, utilizing story grammar diagrams to discern the plot’s cognitive structure.

The results demonstrate that the story grammar of Gadis Kretek intricately weaves themes of trust and betrayal, which are directly linked to the dynamics of business relationships depicted in the narrative. The discourse analysis reveals that trust and betrayal are integral components of business partnerships within the story. Trust is constructed through several mechanisms, including contractual trust, communication trust, and competence trust. Conversely, the study identifies that betrayal in the business context arises from several factors, such as a lack of communication, the absence of commitment, and deep-seated dissatisfaction within the partnership. This research highlights how literary discourse can reflect the complexities of professional and personal integrity in a historical industrial setting.
