Abstract

Rahmaniyah, Nadiatur. 2024. Investigating Students’ Difficulties in Learning Vocabulary. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Durratul Hikmah, M.Pd.

Keywords: Student Difficulties, Vocabulary Learning, EFL Learners.

This study aims to investigate the internal and external factors contributing to students' difficulties in learning vocabulary at MA Nurul Jadid. The participants consisted of ten students from class XII IPA Tahfid, selected based on criteria of having the lowest daily vocabulary scores. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the researcher conducted semi-structured interviews to gather in-depth data. Each interview was recorded and transcribed to ensure a rigorous analysis of the challenges faced by the students.

The findings reveal that a significant number of students encounter substantial obstacles in three primary areas: correct pronunciation, accurate spelling, and the proper application of word meanings. These difficulties are driven by both internal and external factors. Internal factors include low learning motivation, a reluctance to use dictionaries, and a lack of regular speaking practice. External factors involve inadequate learning facilities and the influence of the social environment (peers). Based on these results, the study concludes that students need to be more proactive and confident in practicing English pronunciation. Furthermore, it is suggested that English teachers should employ more inspiring and focused teaching strategies to enhance student concentration and vocabulary retention in the classroom.
