Abstract

Maghfiroh, Nazilatul. 2024. Analyzing the Factors Behind Students’ Speaking Anxiety. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Speaking Anxiety, Characteristics, Anxiety Factors.

This research aims to analyze the characteristics and factors contributing to anxiety among students when speaking English. Foreign language speaking anxiety is a pervasive issue that can significantly hinder students' ability to communicate effectively and acquire essential language skills. Adopting a qualitative approach, this study utilized in-depth interviews to explore students' lived experiences, emotions, and perceptions regarding their anxiety in oral communication. Data analysis revealed several primary factors contributing to this phenomenon, including the fear of making mistakes, lack of self-confidence, shyness, and nervousness. Furthermore, lack of preparation, limited vocabulary, and the influence of peers or classmates were identified as critical external and internal pressures. The findings of this research offer a deeper understanding of the dynamics of English speaking anxiety and provide actionable recommendations for educators and educational institutions to implement supportive strategies, ultimately helping students mitigate their anxiety and enhance their speaking proficiency.
