Abstract

Hidayah, Nur Aisyatul. 2024. The Students’ Strategies in Improving Speaking Skill. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Learning Strategies, Speaking Skill, Narrative Inquiry.

The critical importance of speaking proficiency in English language acquisition drives this study to explore the strategies employed by students in non-English regular classes. Specifically, this research aims to investigate how these students enhance their English speaking skills within a boarding school environment. Adopting a qualitative approach with a narrative inquiry design, the study utilized longitudinal observations and in-depth interviews as the primary data collection methods. Observations were conducted to identify real-time strategy application in the school setting, while structured interviews were designed to elicit detailed personal experiences regarding skill improvement.

The participants were selected from the non-English regular class students at SMA Nurul Jadid, who reside within the Islamic boarding school (pesantren) system. The findings reveal that the students consistently utilize three primary categories of learning strategies to improve their speaking proficiency: memory strategies, social strategies, and cognitive strategies. By identifying these student-led approaches, educators can more effectively integrate these strategies into formal speaking instruction to better support learners in similar educational contexts.
