Abstract

Laili, Putri Nur. 2024. Exploring EFL Students' Perceptions of Feedback Types in Speaking Skills: A Case at English Education Department. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Feedback, Speaking Skills, Students’ Perceptions.

Feedback is a fundamental component of language acquisition, particularly in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) contexts where speaking proficiency is essential. This research explores students' perceptions regarding various types of feedback provided at the English Education Department of Nurul Jadid University. The study aims to identify the types of feedback delivered by lecturers, investigate how students perceive this feedback, and examine its influence on their speaking performance.

Adopting a qualitative approach with thematic analysis, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with five sixth-semester students. Participants were selected via purposive sampling based on their engagement in speaking classes and their ability to recall specific feedback experiences. The findings reveal that students receive feedback in the forms of suggestions, praise, and criticism. Suggestions focus on technical improvements, praise serves as positive reinforcement, and criticism is utilized to correct specific deficiencies.

Overall, students maintain a highly positive perception of lecturer feedback, viewing it as a vital element of the learning process. The results indicate that such feedback leads to significant improvements in technical speaking skills, increased self-confidence, and heightened motivation. By recognizing and correcting their errors through constructive feedback, students feel more encouraged to engage in further practice, demonstrating that feedback plays a transformative role in their speaking development.
