Abstract

Ningsih, Sulistiawati. 2024. English Speaking Anxiety Among Pre-Service Teachers: A Case Study. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Program, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.

Keywords: English Speaking Anxiety, Pre-Service Teachers, Coping Strategies.

This study aims to identify the factors contributing to English speaking anxiety, the coping strategies employed, and the resulting impact of this anxiety on pre-service English teachers. Utilizing a qualitative case study approach, the research involved five female pre-service teachers in their seventh semester and two additional students during the 2023/2024 academic year at Nurul Jadid University. Data were collected through field observations and semi-structured interviews. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, encompassing three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification.

The results revealed five primary factors driving anxiety: (1) lack of preparation, (2) fear of negative evaluation, (3) limited English proficiency, (4) an unsupportive classroom environment, and (5) a lack of prior teaching experience. To mitigate these feelings, the participants employed several coping strategies, such as preparing material outlines, conducting prior teaching rehearsals, utilizing code-mixing (mixed language), fostering active student engagement, and practicing relaxation techniques. Furthermore, the study found that speaking anxiety negatively impacts the teaching process by reducing fluency and clarity of delivery, as well as straining the teacher-student relationship. These findings suggest the need for more intensive practical training to build confidence among pre-service teachers before they enter the professional classroom setting.
