Abstract

Umami. 2024. Digging Psychological Factors in Foreign Language Speaking Skills: A Case of EFL Learners. Undergraduate Program, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.

Keywords: EFL Learners, Psychological Factors, Speaking Skill.

Psychological factors play a pivotal role in determining the success of students' oral communication in a foreign language. This study aims to describe the psychological factors that significantly influence the speaking performance of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners and to identify the coping mechanisms employed to overcome these barriers. Utilizing a qualitative case study design, the research involved five senior high school students at SMA Nurul Jadid as the primary subjects. Data were collected through in-depth observations and interviews, which were subsequently analyzed using thematic coding to identify recurring psychological patterns.

The research findings indicate that several psychological factors majorly impact students' speaking abilities, namely: high levels of anxiety (worry and nervousness), stress, lack of self-confidence, shyness, and a persistent fear of making mistakes. These factors often create a mental block that hinders fluency and spontaneity. To mitigate these issues, the study identified three primary coping mechanisms utilized by the learners: thorough preparation and practice, positive self-talk to build mental resilience, and relaxation techniques to reduce physiological tension before speaking. This study suggests that creating a supportive classroom environment is essential to help students manage their affective filters and improve their communicative competence.
