Abstract

Magfiroh, Ana. 2025. Exploring EFL Learners’ Experiences in Developing Speaking Skills: A Narrative Inquiry. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Keywords: Speaking Skills, EFL Student Experiences, Narrative Inquiry.

English speaking proficiency within Indonesian educational institutions remains a complex area that is seldom explored from the learners' personal perspectives. This study investigates the lived experiences of EFL learners at an institution that adopts English as its medium of interaction, focusing on the challenges and barriers encountered during their language development. A significant concern addressed in this research is the phenomenon of a four-year delay in achieving oral fluency among students. Utilizing a narrative inquiry research design, the study explores the longitudinal journeys of four voluntarily selected participants through in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed thematically to capture the essence of each individual’s unique story.

The findings reveal that learners face multi-faceted difficulties in developing speaking skills. Primary linguistic obstacles include limited vocabulary and significant challenges in pronunciation, particularly due to the irregularity between English orthography (spelling) and phonology (sound). Furthermore, psychological factors such as low motivation, lack of confidence, and the fear of making mistakes during sentence formation were found to be major contributory factors to the delay in fluency. Based on these findings, the study suggests that the roles of teachers, mentors, and the institutional support system must be critically evaluated and enhanced to better address the specific obstacles faced by learners in achieving English speaking proficiency.
