Abstract
Sya’diyah, Dewi Halimatus. 2025. An Analysis of English Speaking Difficulties Faced by Tenth-Grade Students in a Tahfidz-Based Islamic Senior High School. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: Speaking Difficulties, EFL Learners, Tahfidz-Based School, Pesantren Environment.
This study investigates the challenges encountered by tenth-grade students in English speaking within the specific context of a tahfidz-based Islamic senior high school. The research aims to identify the primary linguistic obstacles, the psychological factors influencing these difficulties, and the impact of the pesantren environment on students' motivation and opportunities for oral communication. Adopting a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through systematic observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation.
The findings reveal that students struggle with significant linguistic barriers, including limited vocabulary, inaccurate pronunciation, and weak grammatical mastery. Furthermore, internal psychological factors such as high anxiety and a pervasive fear of making mistakes significantly hinder their fluency. Externally, the development of speaking skills is constrained by a non-English-speaking social environment and the rigorous schedule of tahfidz (Quran memorization) activities, which limits the time allocated for language practice.
The study concludes that students' speaking proficiency is shaped by an interplay between individual psychological barriers and the unique structural constraints of their religious educational setting. This research contributes to the field by providing contextual insights into adaptive English language learning approaches tailored for tahfidz boarding schools. Additionally, it serves as a strategic reference for educators and curriculum developers in designing effective speaking-teaching methods that harmonize with the intensive demands of religious education.
