Abstract
Putri, Faradila Arsylia. 2025. Optimizing the Pesantren Environment to Enhance Speaking Skills. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.
Keywords: Pesantren Environment, English Speaking Skills, Optimization.
The pesantren (Islamic boarding school) provides a unique sociolinguistic setting that can either facilitate or hinder language acquisition depending on its environmental optimization. This study investigates how the pesantren environment can be optimized to enhance students’ English speaking skills. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, the research involved five eighth-semester female students from the English Education Program who are active participants in the pesantren language programs. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom and dormitory observations, and documentation, then processed using thematic analysis.
The findings reveal that speaking proficiency is significantly bolstered by four primary pillars: structured language programs, consistent peer collaboration, effective teacher role modeling, and the strategic integration of English into daily religious activities. These elements create a "language immersion" atmosphere that encourages spontaneous communication. However, the study also identified several critical challenges, including inconsistent language policy implementation, psychological barriers such as anxiety, and limited exposure to native-like English fluency.
The research concludes that a supportive environment, reinforced by a consistent language policy and contextual learning opportunities, is vital for improving students' communicative competence. The results are expected to provide a strategic framework for developing pesantren-based English learning models in Indonesia, emphasizing the synergy between religious tradition and modern linguistic demands.
