Abstract
Indriyani, Kholifatul. 2025. A Case Study of Using Role Play in Teaching Speaking at Islamic Elementary School Raudlatus Shibyan. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.
Keywords: Role Play, Teaching Speaking, Speaking Skills, Islamic Elementary School.
Integrating communicative methods within Islamic-based elementary education remains a significant area for pedagogical exploration. This study investigates the implementation of the Role Play method in teaching speaking at Islamic Elementary School Raudlatus Shibyan and analyzes its impact on students' speaking skills. In such environments, students often face limited exposure to English, necessitating innovative approaches to bridge the gap. Role-playing serves as a unique method to provide meaningful speaking scenarios while aligning with the school’s academic and religious values.
This research employed a qualitative case study design. The subjects included the English teacher and fifth-grade students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and documentation, including teaching modules and student learning outcomes. Data analysis followed the interactive model of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings reveal that the Role Play method is applied through three systematic stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. During implementation, students are divided into small groups and assigned scenarios relevant to daily life. This technique effectively increases student participation, enriches vocabulary, and enhances fluency and confidence. Observation results indicated an increase in verbal interactions, while interviews revealed heightened student motivation. Despite these benefits, challenges such as time constraints and diverse proficiency levels persist, requiring more individualized instructional approaches. Overall, the study concludes that Role Play creates a communicative and supportive learning environment, significantly aiding the development of speaking skills in elementary school students.
