Abstract

Arifah, S. N. 2025. The Effect of ELSA Speak on Students' English Speaking Skills at the Eighth Grade of MTs Zainul Anwar Kraksaan. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Syaiful Islam, M.Pd.

Keywords: Speaking Skills, ELSA Speak, Artificial Intelligence, Pronunciation, MALL.

Developing oral communicative competence remains a significant challenge for EFL learners, particularly in Islamic junior high schools where interactive oral practice is often constrained by limited resources. This study aims to examine the effect of utilizing the ELSA Speak application—an AI-powered platform specializing in pronunciation—on the English speaking skills of eighth-grade students at MTs Zainul Anwar Kraksaan. The investigation specifically focuses on improvements in pronunciation, intonation, and fluency through Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL).Employing a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design, the study involved 18 students who engaged with the ELSA Speak application systematically. Data were collected through standardized oral proficiency tests administered before and after the intervention. The data were then analyzed using a paired sample t-test to determine the significance of the improvement. The findings reveal a statistically significant improvement in students’ speaking scores, with the mean score increasing from 50.61 to 59.50 and a significance value (p-value) of 0.013 ($p < 0.05$). These results indicate that ELSA Speak effectively enhances students’ speaking performance by providing immediate, AI-driven feedback on phonetic accuracy. In conclusion, the integration of AI-based tools like ELSA Speak serves as an adaptive and practical solution for developing speaking proficiency, especially in under-resourced educational settings. This study supports the broader implementation of digital transformation in secondary-level language education to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical oral skills.
