Abstract
Anas, Wildani Nuril. 2025. The Student Experience in Winning English Competitions: A Case Study at LIPS of Nurul Jadid. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Moh. Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.
Keywords: English Competition, Student Experience, LIPS Nurul Jadid, Phenomenological Study.
Participating in academic competitions serves as a catalyst for both linguistic and personal development. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of students in winning English competitions and to analyze the academic factors contributing to their success within the Language and Islamic Public Speaking (LIPS) program at Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School.
Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, the researcher acted as the primary instrument, supported by prolonged engagement to enhance the credibility of the findings. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and documentation, capturing the essence of the students' journey from preparation to achievement.
Thematic analysis revealed that the LIPS extracurricular framework contributes significantly to the holistic improvement of the four language skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Key enabling factors identified include intensive mentoring, peer tutoring, structured coaching, and emotional encouragement. However, the journey toward victory was not without obstacles; students identified time constraints, pronunciation complexities, and performance anxiety as significant hurdles. These challenges were mitigated through disciplined practice, intrinsic motivation, and collaborative institutional support.
The study concludes that the experience of winning English competitions fosters not only linguistic competence but also a profound transformation in students’ self-confidence and academic identity. These findings underscore the vital role of performance-based extracurricular activities in shaping learners’ engagement and enthusiasm within a multilingual educational environment.
