Abstract
Khomariyah, Yanti. 2025. Integrating Duolingo to Enhance EFL Learners' Speaking Proficiency in Zain Academy. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Department, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor: Mochlis Ekowijayanto, M.Pd.

Despite possessing adequate grammatical knowledge, many EFL learners in Indonesia struggle with speaking proficiency due to high communicative anxiety, limited authentic exposure, and insufficient opportunities for oral practice in traditional classrooms. This study investigates the integration of the Duolingo application as an innovative solution to enhance speaking skills at Zain Academy. Duolingo’s gamified environment and interactive features, particularly its speech recognition technology, provide a low-anxiety platform for learners to practice verbal output.
This research employs a qualitative case study design. Data were gathered through direct classroom observations, in-depth interviews with both learners and instructors, and comprehensive document analysis. To ensure the validity and reliability of the findings, data triangulation was utilized across multiple sources.
The findings indicate that the integration of Duolingo significantly enhances students' speaking proficiency through several key mechanisms: (1) boosting self-confidence by providing a non-threatening practice environment; (2) improving phonetic accuracy via immediate feedback from speech recognition tools; (3) expanding active vocabulary; and (4) refining sentence structure, particularly for learners who already possess a foundational understanding of English. The study concludes that Duolingo serves as an effective supplementary tool in bridging the gap between theoretical linguistic knowledge and practical oral performance. These results suggest that language institutions should adopt hybrid learning models that leverage mobile technology to foster more communicative and engaging EFL environments.
