Abstract
Ainun Nikmah. 2025. Students' errors in solving word problems on statistics material. Undergraduate thesis, Mathematics Education Program, Faculty of Social and Humanities, Universitas Nurul Jadid, Paiton Probolinggo. Advisor: Shofia Hidayah, M.Pd.
Keywords: students’ errors, word problems, statistics, Newman’s theory, case study
This study aims to describe the types of students’ errors in solving mathematical word problems on statistics material and to analyze the factors that contribute to these errors using Newman’s Error Analysis framework. The research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects consisted of six eighth-grade students from MTs Nurul Jadid, selected based on diagnostic test results and categorized into three cognitive ability levels: high, medium, and low. Data were collected through written tests, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis referred to the five stages of Newman’s theory: reading, comprehension, transformation, process skills, and encoding.
The results showed that students with high cognitive ability were generally able to complete all stages of Newman’s framework successfully, although minor errors still occurred during the process stage. Students with medium ability often made errors in the comprehension, transformation, and process skills stages. Meanwhile, students with low ability experienced difficulties in almost all stages, particularly in the process skills and encoding stages. Factors contributing to these errors included a lack of conceptual understanding, misreading of information, inaccuracy in calculations, and less effective teaching methods. These findings provide valuable insights for educators in understanding students’ difficulties and in designing more effective instructional strategies to improve mathematical problem-solving skills.
