Abstract

Zakiyuddin, Mohammad. 2023. The Implementation of English Songs to Improve Students’ Listening Skill. Undergraduate Program, Nurul Jadid University. Advisor (I) Abdullah Al Anis, M.Pd., Advisor (II) Mohammad Sofyan Adi Pranata, M.Li.

Keywords: Implementation, English Songs, Listening Skill.

This research was motivated by identified gaps in the learning process and students' difficulties in understanding the material, often resulting from low enthusiasm due to the teacher's reliance on the traditional lecture method. Preliminary observations revealed that students struggled to comprehend listening materials and English sentences. To address these issues, the researcher implemented English songs as a teaching technique to improve listening skills, which is a fundamental language proficiency alongside speaking and reading. This study utilized Classroom Action Research (CAR) at SMPI Miftahul Ulum Pakuniran, with a sample of 15 seventh-grade students. Data were collected through observation and tests. Qualitative findings indicated an improvement in students' learning outcomes regarding nouns and verbs, evidenced by increased passion, a livelier classroom atmosphere, and more active student participation. Quantitative data further supported this improvement; the average student score rose from 55.33 in the pre-test (where only two students reached the passing grade) to 81.33 in the post-test. These results demonstrate that the use of English songs effectively enhances both student engagement and listening proficiency. Based on these findings, it is suggested that teachers utilize creative media in the teaching-learning process to facilitate better delivery, comprehension, and retention of the material.
